50 Million Tree Program

A Northumberland County tree planter says he is encouraged by the enthusiasm of local landowners to plant trees this spring through the 50 Million Tree Program (50 MTP).

Planting trees on your property has many benefits. A new forest will clean the air, invite wildlife, reduce erosion, add beauty and sequester carbon. But did you know that your new forest can also substantially lower your tax bill? The Province of Ontario offers this tax-saving opportunity through its Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP). MFTIP sounds like a mouthful; the short version is this: more trees can = reduced taxes.

It is time to wake up to some harsh realities. Climate change is here and we are experiencing its wrath in many ways, including drought, heat-waves, fires and, most acutely, extreme flood events. The agony of loss has been captured many times over in the media coverage of this year’s floods in Ottawa, Gatineau, Bracebridge and elsewhere across the country and globe. As many experts have predicted, this is only the beginning – it will get worse.

More than 500,000 new trees are growing in honour of Canadian veterans, thanks to the combined efforts of the Highway of Heroes (HOH) Tree Campaign and Forests Ontario.
